VOIP Phone Service

VOIP services have come a long way since their mass market introduction in 2004. There is no longer a need to use software and a PC microphone to make calls to a regular phone line. Top 3 VOIP Quick Tips

TIP One
Should you use VOIP? Basically, if you have small children in the house - then my first tip is VOIP lines should NOT be your primary phone line. The reason? 911 calls. No matter what the marketing material says from any provider - if the power or your Internet connection goes out - you and your loved ones are SOL. This goes for cell phones too - they should not be your primary phone provider either.

If you're single or you're running a business or need a second line - then VOIP is the way to go!
TIP Two
Need a FAX line or a modem line for your DVR(like Tivo) or Alarm service? While trickey - its definitely possible using your VOIP line - and geneally without upgrading to your provider's more expensive services. Basically you need to set your VOIP to its best quality of service and your modem line to its lowest setting. See your provider's instructions for doing this.

Also when dialing, make sure to try the following sequence first before dialing the number:

*70,*99,

This sequence will help setup the device to handle VOIP traffic. For more details use your favorite search engine to help troubleshoot. I would not rely on your provider's FAQ or tech support team first.

TIP Three
Beware of SCAMs! Yep,  even VOIP systems are being scammed and are being used to SCAM  now. Its a take off on the  email phishing scams and what security folks call "Social Engineering" Attacks. Basically its an email or a phone call you receive saying you need to activate your account or to verbally verify your account. The theives are really using a cheap VOIP based PBX system to get you to leave valuable information on their system. As always - if you don't originate the contact, then I would never give up personally identifyable information.
